Indian Roti recipe and Indian Chapati recipe are almost the same things.
These names are used interchangeably in India and this confuses so many people when they are ordering for either of them in restaurants.
The common ingredient in roti and chapati is whole wheat flour. You just cannot use any Indian flatbread recipe that has no wheat flour.
Let’s get cooking!
Roti Flatbread Ingredients
1 cup each of water, whole wheat flour, and all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoon of salt
2 tablespoons of ghee or oil
Roti Flatbread Procedure
The recipe for roti is similar to the chapati recipe.
Simply mix all the ingredients together. If you have a stand mixer, pour all the ingredients in there and knead for a couple of minutes until the dough is not sticking to the sides. However, if you have no stand mixer, do not panic!
Mix the ingredients and knead the dough with your hands for about 13 minutes.
Preheat your non-stick frying pan on a stove on medium heat.
Divide the dough into 8 to 10 pieces and let it rest for around 16 minutes.
If you’re not going to cook the roti right away, simply seal the dough in a bowl covered with cling film and keep it in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Sprinkle a little flour on the rolling surface and start rolling the pieces one by one.
If you’re ready to cook, go on and roll the dough in a nice round and flat shape with a rolling pin.
If you have no rolling pin, you can use a glass soda bottle that has a flat surface.
After rolling, it’s time for the final piece of the puzzle.
Put the roti on your dry non-stick frying pan that has been preheating on medium heat.
Cook each side for about a minute until you see the bubbles in the Indian flatbread. Cook until the bubbles are brown but don’t burn the roti.
After cooking all the pieces, put them on a tray and cover with a cloth until you’re ready to serve!
