French toast
However, let us first answer the question that is on your mind. Did french toast really come from France? The most reliable answer right now is No! It actually was first made by the Romans of the Roman Empire centuries ago.Â
Apparently, it was first popularized as ‘french toast’ because it was invented by a dude called Joseph French who forgot to add an apostrophe. Otherwise, he meant to call it French’s toast.Â
But for this recipe, we shall be learning how to make toast sticks.Â
Ingredients
2 large eggs
½ cup powdered sugar
¼ cup milk
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon brown sugar
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
6 slices of white bread, cut into thirds
Sunflower oil or butter
A pinch of salt
2 drops of vanilla extract
Instructions on how to make french toast sticks
First, whisk the 2 eggs in a large mixing bowl and add sugar, a pinch of salt, cinnamon, vanilla extract, and milk. Mix these very well and set the bowl aside.
Secondly, cut the slices of bread into thirds to make the sticks.Â
Then preheat your frying pan on medium heat and drizzle in some sunflower oil. Make sure you use a very neutral oil like sunflower oil because you don’t want the flavor of the oil to overpower the cinnamon and vanilla extract flavors. Olive oil tends to have a strong flavor so I don’t recommend that you use it here. You can also substitute the sunflower oil with melted butter. Butter goes great with toast.Â
Dip the sticks into the mixture and fry the sticks on the frying pan for about 2 minutes on each side.Â
Do this until you have cooked all the sticks and put them on a plate.
Conclusion
Lastly, sprinkle the powdered sugar all over the sticks and pour some maple syrup on the sticks. Your sticks are now ready to be served.Â
