If you love baking, am sure you have used buttermilk even without knowing how to make buttermilk with vinegar.
But what exactly is buttermilk?
This is milk that has been cultured. The first thing you’ll notice when you shake and open a new small bottle and pour some into a measuring cup is that it’s thicker than milk. It’s not just thicker, but it’s also lumpier. It has an acidic feel to it when you smell it; it’s not bitter, but more like a faint vinegar feel.
It is used to make pancakes, waffles, biscuits, and muffins, among others.

If you ever want to make some fluffy pancakes, now you know you should try using buttermilk in your recipe. Buttermilk is the reason the pancakes at the restaurant are fluffier and light with a tangy vibe.
If you ever run out of buttermilk, you now know that you can make your own with just two ingredients; milk and vinegar. Also, the one in grocery stores can tend to be quite expensive so this could be a cheaper alternative for you.
Ingredients
1 cup whole milk
1 tablespoon white vinegar (you can use lemon juice too)
Directions on how to make buttermilk from milk
Firstly, pour the vinegar or lemon juice into a liquid measuring cup to produce buttermilk. Fill the cup with milk until it reaches the 1-cup line (you’ll use only a little bit less than a full cup of milk). Stir well to incorporate, then set aside for at least 8 minutes before using.
The finished texture should have some mild curdling at the top. Even if there isn’t a noticeable difference in appearance, the acidity is present, and your homemade product should work in any recipe that calls for the use of buttermilk. Worry not, your pancakes will be quite fluffy. They will be the talk of your house!
However, you may create as much as you need by following this ratio. It’s important to remember that one tablespoon equals three teaspoons.
